Saint Paul, Minnesota – House Minority Leader Paul Thissen applauded the news today that Minnesota will be one of ten states to receive a federal waiver from No Child Left Behind. The waiver will allow Minnesota to begin implementing a meaningful accountability system for Minnesota schools and give school boards flexibility to implement needed education reforms to improve education in Minnesota.
“We are excited to be moving forward with Minnesotan-led education reform that is focused on real results for our students instead of ideological proposals handed down from right-wing Washington D.C. think tanks.
No Child Left Behind helped shine a light on our persistent achievement gap, but failed to address the problem in a meaningful way. Receiving a waiver from this failed program allows Minnesota to take the lead on education reforms and move past the one-size-fits-all system dictated under No Child Left Behind.
The status quo of narrowly judging our schools based on national standardized testing doesn’t cut it anymore. We need a robust accountability system that gives parents a more accurate picture of how our schools are performing and this waiver helps us move forward."
