Minnesotans Give Schools a Vote of Confidence at the Ballot Box

70% of local levies pass, helping mitigate $3 billion in GOP borrowing

House Minority Leader Paul Thissen released the following statement following last night’s election results in which more than 1/3 of Minnesota school districts had a levy referendum on the ballot.

“In the absence of education leadership from Republicans at the Legislature, voters stepped up to the plate yesterday to give our schools and students a vote of confidence. With 70 percent of levy referendums passing, Minnesotans made clear that a quality education is a vital priority for our state’s future. The success of these levies is even more impressive given the unprecedented attempt by several Republican legislators to defeat them.

The election results also confirm that Minnesotans are desperate for education leadership at the State Capitol. After a decade of underfunding, Republicans squeezed our schools even tighter this year by borrowing $3 billion to balance our state books. Levies passed this year will mitigate some of the harm, but a lasting solution that doesn’t rely on more property tax increases to fund schools is still needed.

Minnesota’s economic competitive advantage continues to be our world class schools and highly educated workforce. Let’s stop the games and gimmicks and put the necessary resources in our classrooms so that our children are best prepared to succeed.

Minnesotans agree - education is a priority that’s worth it."
