DAYTON SHOWS STRONG LEADERSHIP AMIDST BUDGET CRISIS Statement from Minority Leader Thissen on Governor’s Fair Deal
Today, Governor Dayton showed the kind of steady, responsible leadership Minnesotans need as we face a historic budget deficit by offering a fair deal for all of us. Like most Minnesotans and the State Economist, Governor Dayton knows that the best way to preserve our fragile economic recovery is to close the deficit with a balance of cuts and revenues.
Leadership is about choices. Today, Governor Dayton chose to reach out to Republicans in the best Minnesota tradition while doing right by our Minnesota values. However, the GOP is choosing to keep their feet in cement while laying waste to Minnesota seniors, small businesses, children, and homeowners with their all-cuts budget.
We need to make difficult choices and cuts. We also need a fair deal that keeps taxes down on 98% of Minnesotans by asking the richest 2% to take a share of the budget-balancing responsibility. A balanced approach is the best choice for Minnesotans. I applaud Governor Dayton for this step forward for all of us.
