In response to the release of the K-12 Education, Higher Education, and Transportation Conference Agreements Minority Leader Thissen issued the following statement:
"In order to protect the special interests, big corporations, and the richest Minnesotans, the GOP has cut our children’s schools by $50 million, asked hard-working middle class families to pay higher tuition and doubled the cost for them to commute on the bus. This budget will only further the squeeze on middle class families and take Minnesota backwards by slashing the K12 and college education that move our state forward, slows the movement of goods, and makes middle class families pay more and get less.
There is no question that Minnesotans face difficult times and tough choices need to be made, but cutting our children’s schools at a time when they need a quality education to compete in the global economy is misguided. Passing budgets that lay off workers at a time when our economy badly needs jobs to recover makes no sense.
It’s no wonder that the GOP is waiting until the last minute to release their budget. They don’t want Minnesotans to learn about their misguided budget priorities - like keeping tax breaks for big corporations while ending support for start up companies that hire Minnesotans. Republicans are afraid to face the consequences of their all-cuts budget, despite their empty rhetoric about tough choices.
Minnesotans deserve a timely, responsible budget that reflects our interests, not the special interests; and that reflects our values of shared responsibility and broad prosperity."
