We should vote no on this public unsafety bill. Just like the other Republican budget bills before it, this bill takes Minnesota backwards, raids funds, raises property taxes and pick-pockets middle class families.
Five funds are raided in this bill. And if you think that doesn’t matter, ask people in greater Minnesota who won’t get faster 911 service or communities who have little-to-no fire protection. Ask the police officer who will have to take money out of his or her own pocket to pay for the training they need. What about the 2009 flood victims who won’t be able to rebuild – small businesses that cannot re-open – because their flood relief matching fund was pillaged. Yes, Members, stealing money matters.
We have a duty and an obligation to the people of Minnesota to keep them safe. Yes, cutting the budget needs to be a part of the solution. That’s why many DFLers voted in favor of yesterday’s Agriculture Bill.
But giving people a get out of jail free card, being soft on crime, and putting our communities at risk is not the right priority. It’s not Minnesotan’s priorities. In fact, it’s a case of dangerously misplaced priorities. Vote no.
