In reaction to today’s Republican budget releases in Jobs and Economic Development, Health and Human Services, and State Government, House Minority Leader Paul Thissen issued the following statement:
Today’s released budgets show just how far Republicans will go to protect their wealthy campaign donors at the expense of hard working Minnesotans. The GOP budgets in Health and Human Services (HHS), Jobs and Economic Development, and State Government Finance combine into a recovery-crippling package that directly attacks middle class families.
The worst job-killing is included in the Republican Jobs and Economic Development budget. While government does not create jobs, it can support private sector job creation, especially in new industries. The Republican Jobs budget does the opposite – slashing support for small business development, innovation, and new industries. Instead of supporting businesses in creating the jobs of the future, this budget brings us back to the failures of the past.
No one argues that the state needs to tighten its belt, but slashing thousands of good-paying jobs that support the middle class is a case of misplaced priorities in the State Government Operations budget as well.
In HHS, cuts to reimbursements for health care providers – hospitals and nursing homes – will mean job losses in communities across the state as these private-sector health care industries further tighten their belts. In many communities, nursing homes or hospitals are one of the biggest employers and the impact will be devastating.
The Republican budget not only magnifies the Pawlenty policies that got us into this mess, but also kills jobs at a time when it is critical for us to create them.
