St. Paul, MN – Members of the House Health and Human Services Policy and Oversight Committee will hear the findings of the Minnesota Commission to End Poverty by 2020 at a hearing scheduled for Monday, October 5th.
Tom Gillaspy, State Demographer, Minnesota Department of Administration, Rep. Carlos Mariani, Chair of the Commission, and Rep. Morrie Lanning, lead Republican on the Commission, and others will present the report. The Minnesota Commission to End Poverty by 2020 began its work in 2007; this is the first time their findings will be heard by a state legislative committee.
“The findings of this commission are even more relevant today considering the current economic climate," said Rep. Paul Thissen, Chair of the Health and Human Services Policy Committee. “As our economy recovers, however, we need to be mindful that life for our fellow Minnesotans living in poverty will not necessarily improve. It will be important that we use this report to help set a path for economic recovery for every Minnesotan.”
The committee will also hear from several experts on racial disparities and the socioeconomic determinants of health. Included among the speakers will be Patricia Adams, Assistant Commissioner at the Minnesota Department of Health, and individuals working on the front lines to deliver culturally competent care: Dr. Penny Wheeler, Chief Clinical Officer, Allina Hospitals and Clinics, Angie Koch, Director, HealthFinders Collaborative, Inc., Rice County, and Andrea Leinberger-Jabari, M.P.H., Domestic Program Director, Minnesota International Health Volunteers, Somali Health Care Initiative.
“Minnesota outperforms other states on most measures of health including access and quality,” said Thissen. “Despite this success, Minnesota lags behind other states on measures of equity. This hearing will provide an opportunity to learn about effective community strategies that are working to improve the health of Minnesota’s minority populations.”
