MINNESOTA CAN LEAD IN "GREEN CHEMISTRY"

The University of Minnesota is hosting an important conference today on "Green Chemistry." Also known as sustainable chemistry, "Green Chemistry" refers to environmentally friendly chemicals and processes that result in reduced waste and pollution, safer products, and reduced use of energy and resources—all improving the competitiveness of chemical manufacturers and their customers.
"Green Chemistry sounds like just another catchy phrase of the environmental movement, but it should not be dismissed," said State Rep. Paul Thissen (DFL-Minneapolis). "Minnesota can be a true leader and reap the economic rewards of a new revolution in manufacturing."
Rep Thissen, along with State Sen. Kathy Saltzman, is Chief Author of the Safe and Healthy Products Act (HF 4237). The legislation calls for the creation and implementation of a comprehensive and integrated plan to promote in Minnesota the manufacture and design of affordable, high-quality products that reduce or eliminate risks to health or the environment. The proposed law also sets up an advisory council of scientists, business representatives, and environmental and public health experts to provide guidance to the legislature.
"The news has been filled with stories about the dangers associated with the chemicals and compounds in everyday products from plastic baby bottles to fire retardants. Constituents and consumers are demanding action." said Thissen. "The Safe and Healthy Products Act sets us on a course to make informed and forward-thinking decisions about the risks of current products and the potential rewards of investing creatively in new, safer products."
