The Minnesota House of Representatives passed newborn screening legislation sponsored by Rep. Paul Thissen today. The goal of the bill is to prevent childhood diseases by catching them early enough to treat them.
"The tragedy of childhood diseases is that oftentimes they could be prevented if they were detected early enough," said Thissen. "This is common sense legislation that will protect the health of newborns and at the same time offer parents a measure of reassurance."
The bill includes an "opt out" provision for parents opposed to the screening.
"Many parents are unaware they are carriers of congenital diseases that can drastically alter or even end their child's life," said Thissen. "This bill makes sure parents have full information to make decisions about the testing and ensure more widespread screening. The result will be improved health and a better quality of life for our children."
The bill has the support of the Minnesota Department of Health and the Minnesota Chapter of the March of Dimes, as well as widespread support throughout the medical community.
