ST. PAUL - State Representatives Dan Larson and Paul Thissen are pleased to announce that Richfield will be receiving over $800,000 more in Local Government Aid (LGA) than was previously expected. LGA is money that cities can use to pay police officers and firefighters, to maintain and improve local parks and and to keep local streets clean and plowed. The Department of Revenue's certified numbers give Richfield $2,007,206 in LGA for 2007, and increase of over $1 million from last year.
"This is great news," Larson said. "Even partial restoration of previous LGA cuts helps Richfield pay for vital services without having to rely as heavily on property taxes."
In 2003, $300 million in LGA was cut statewide with Richfield loosing millions in expected money. Representatives Thissen and Larson opposed the deep cuts to LGA.
"That cut to city aid put into motion the property tax increases we've all been seeing," added Thissen. "We fought successfully in the 2005 session to restore some of those LGA cuts and provide property tax relief and the news we received about Richfield’s LGA is the direct consequence of those efforts. But we still have a ways to go. Permanent property tax relief needs to be a top priority for the 2007 Legislative session."
