Representative Paul Thissen was recently appointed by House Speaker Steve Sviggum to the Legislative Commission on Pensions and Retirement. The Commission studies and investigates state and local public pension plans.
“It’s an honor to be asked to serve on this Commission," Rep. Thissen said. “The integrity and solvency of Minnesota’s public pensions have a profound impact on the quality of life for many retired people in Richfield and Minneapolis and the rest of us who plan to retire someday. Ensuring sustainable and certain pensions for our retired teachers, police, and firefighters is my top priority.”
The Commission consists of five members of the Senate and five members of the House of Representatives. Members are appointed at the commencement of each biennium. The Commission has the responsibility to oversee all aspects of pension planning to establish and maintain sound pension policy for all funds. It also reviews all public pension legislation before action is taken in policy-making committees.
“As anyone who reads the local news knows, the stock market crash has a devastating impact on public pensions. Many pensions now face significant financial challenges, and local property tax payers are on the hook for weakness in our public retirement system,” Rep. Thissen said. “I am committed to making the changes necessary to ensure the financial soundness of the system for the long-term.”
