ST. PAUL - Fresh off the House passing legislation to make it harder for local governments to use eminent domain power for economic development, State Representative Paul Thissen learned he was appointed to the conference committee tasked with ironing out differences with the Senate's version. Thissen, who is a co-author of the House bill, has been working towards eminent domain reform for the past few years.
"I really appreciate having a seat at the table on this legislation that is so important to our community," Thissen said. "After working on this issue for a number of years, I'm glad to be able to see this reform all the way through the legislative process."
Both bills limit local governments' authority to use eminent domain to take private property for economic development. The bills also gives provide property owners a chance to fight eminent domain with some attorney's fees if they prevail in court.
The House and Senate will vote on the final conference committee report and the Governor has indicated he'll sign an eminent domain reform bill.
