BILL CREATING LEGISLATIVE OVERSIGHT OF MAC CLEARS FIRST HURDLE

ST. PAUL - The House Local Government Committee passed a bill requiring legislative oversight of the Metropolitan Airports Commission (MAC). The bill, sponsored by State Representative Paul Thissen, creates a formal and consistent process for reviewing MAC's budgets and plans by the Legislative Commission on Metropolitan Government (LCMG). LCMG is an existing bipartisan commission created in 2001 to oversee the Metropolitan Council. A 2003 study by the nonpartisan Legislative Auditor recommended more public accountability for MAC.

"MAC is a public entity that spends public money, has the power to levy property taxes, and is responsible for noise mitigation in our communities," Thissen said. "Yet there is no standing mechanism for oversight and accountability."

The bill now heads to the House Government Operations Committee.
