Surplus Should Go to Property Tax Relief

Some residents of Brooklyn Park will see significant property tax increases this year. While city, county and school district officials have made an admirable effort to hold down spending, one big reason behind the property tax increases was the decision of the Governor and House Republican leaders to shift additional financial burdens over to local governments and school districts, a move I opposed.

Property tax increases are particularly hard on the seniors and young families living in Brooklyn Park. I would like to see the recently announced state budget surplus go to property tax relief by repaying the state's payment shifts to schools, which will improve their ability to hold the line on property taxes, and increasing property tax refunds.

I encourage residents to find out if they are eligible for a property tax refund (this includes renters). For homeowners, you can qualify for a refund based on your household income or an increase in your property taxes of at least 12% and $100. Renters may be eligible for a property refund based on your household income and on the property taxes paid on your principal place of residence. To determine if you are eligible for one of these refunds, read and fill out Form M1PR, available at http://www.taxes.state.mn.us/taxes/prop_refund/index.shtml . You may also call the Department of Revenue at 651-296-3781.

Sincerely,

Michael Nelson
