Greetings from the State Capitol!
We’re less than two weeks away from the start of the 2006 session, and things are really beginning to heat up. On Wednesday, the Capital Investment Committee traveled to Hastings to get a first-hand look at some bonding proposals I’m sponsoring. We visited the Veterans Home and discussed some asset preservation needs, and we also heard about the need for a supportive housing unit. Under this proposal, we would create a 30-unit building that would serve as transitional housing for patients as they leave the Veterans Home and prepare to return to their community. It was a solid presentation and I’m confident that both of these initiatives will be included in the House bonding bill.
All of our House committees are beginning to meet again as well. I’ve made several trips to the Capitol recently to take part in both Environment and Government Operations and Veterans Affairs hearings. It’s important to have hearings now so we can hit the ground running once session begins.
Be on the lookout for my session survey! It’s scheduled to arrive in your mailbox around March 1. I hope you’ll take the time to fill it out, as I value your opinions.
Finally, I’d like to give a quick reminder about precinct caucuses. This year’s event will be held on Tuesday, March 7 at 7:00 p.m. The true purpose of the evening is to gather as a local party unit to discuss issues and choose delegates. In addition to that, I strongly support the precinct caucus process because it is a chance to meet neighbors and get involved.
Precinct caucuses are the first step in Minnesota’s political process, and the best chance to have your voice heard. I urge you to make plans this year to attend and take an active role in our election process.
