NEWS AND VIEWS WITH REP. DENNY McNAMARA

Hello from the State Capitol,

The 2012 Legislative Session has begun, and the good news is our top priority this session will not be eliminating a projected budget deficit. With a nearly $1 billion surplus, we are – by law – going to replenish our budget reserves and have it available in case we ever need to eliminate another budget deficit.

With no budget crisis to deal with, the Legislature is going to focus on improving Minnesota’s job climate and strengthening our economy for the future, as well as making state government more accountable and efficient.

In short, we are going to reform.

Last session, we were able to pass dozens of reform measures, which some predicted will save Minnesota billions of dollars in future budgets. If that plan was considered the first phase of reform in Minnesota, then Reform 2.0 is scheduled to build on that success in 2012.

Having visited nearly two dozen cities over the past few months in order to gather reform ideas from Minnesotans, the Legislature’s Reform 2.0 agenda will focus on growing the private sector economy, reforming our education and health care systems, and continuing to reduce the size and cost of state government.

I’ll outline more specifics of Reform 2.0 in the weeks ahead, but know the Legislature is committed to creating a more efficient government, living within our means, and improving Minnesota’s economy through job creation, not tax increases.

I’d also like to let you know that Senator Sieben and I will be holding a town meeting in Hastings on Saturday, January 28. We’d like to hear your input on potential topics that could be debated at the State Capitol this year and hope you are able to attend. The meeting will be held in the Community Room at the Pleasant Hill Library, 1490 S. Frontage Rd., in Hastings beginning at 1:30 p.m.

If you cannot attend, know that I always welcome your input at any time. Feel free to contact me at 437-2597 or send me an email at rep.denny.mcnamara@house.mn.

Keep in touch,
Denny
