McNAMARA SAYS GOVERNOR’S STATE OF THE STATE ADDRESS RIGHT ON TRACK

ST. PAUL – State Representative Denny McNamara (R-Hastings) said he was encouraged by Governor Tim Pawlenty’s State of the State Address, which included bold initiatives to increase jobs and increase K-12 education funding.

“We’re facing a $5 billion budget deficit, and we’re going to need to think outside-the-box if we’re going to get this economy back on track,” McNamara said. “He wants to protect our veterans, taxpayers, public safety programs, and children’s health insurance, dedicate more money to our schools, and put more people to work.”

Pawlenty’s address outlined a number of initiatives that would encourage job growth in Minnesota. It includes cutting Minnesota’s business tax rate from 9.8 percent to 4.8 percent over the next six years; providing tax credits in order to grow jobs and small business investment; and providing tax exemptions for qualifying investments in small businesses in Minnesota and for the purchases of capital equipment.

“We’ll make our way out of this deficit if we create more jobs,” McNamara said. “Giving some financial incentives to small businesses in Minnesota will encourage employers to hire more workers.”

McNamara was also pleased that the Governor encouraged the Legislature to not raise state tax rates.

“The Governor realizes that we’ve got to do things differently as this session moves forward,” McNamara said. “It’s a tough economy and our citizens can’t handle an increased financial burden. They’re struggling and they expect their government to do more with less.”

McNamara invites residents to share their budget opinions at his upcoming town meetings with
State Senator Katie Sieben on Saturday, January 24. The meetings will be held in Afton at the Afton Bean from 9:00-10:00 a.m.; and in Hastings at the City Hall, 101 4th Street, from 11:00-12:00 noon.
