NEWS AND VIEWS WITH REP. DENNY McNAMARA

Hi everybody,

Now that Minnesotans have approved the constitutional amendment that guarantees funding for the environment and the arts, several of you have wondered about how people will be appointed to the Lessard Heritage Council. This is the board which will make recommendations to the legislature regarding the 1/3 of the new sales tax revenue which is dedicated to prairies, forests and fish and wildlife habitat.

The Governor will appoint four public members to the 12-member council, while the Speaker of the House and the Senate Majority Leader will each appoint two public members.

The statute was crafted to say that if the amendment passed, the board would meet no later than December 1. The governor must make his decision and the appointees must be announced via press release no later than November 24. Appointments take effect five days after they are announced - so the 28th would make them effective in time for a December 1 meeting deadline.

This means applications to the Governor’s office must be submitted by Monday, November 17.

If you are interested in serving on the Lessard Heritage Council, I urge you to visit www.sos.state.mn.us/docs/oa_application.pdf, and fill out the application. Once complete, fax it to Annie Paruccini, Director of Board & Commission Appointments, at 651-296-0056.
