Hi everybody,
Here is another example of when folks work together good things can
happen.
Good news for the Minnesota Veterans Home in Hastings! I recently
learned it has received funding to build a supportive housing complex on
its campus.
On October 23, the Minnesota Housing Finance Agency (MHFA) approved
more than $10 million to build the complex, with $7,835,218 from a
General Obligation (GO) bond, and the remaining $2,289,782 coming from
the Ending Long-Term Homeless Initiative Fund (ELHIF).
In addition, the Hastings Veterans Home was granted an operating
subsidy of $155,000 for two years. It is anticipated that the operating
subsidy will be committed for a 10-year term, but will be renewed each
biennium subject to funding availability.
In addition to the funding approved from the MHFA, Hastings Veterans
Home representatives also presented their proposal to the Dakota County
Community Development Agency (CDA) Board of Commissioners on August 12,
2008. As a result, they received a $300,000 HOPE (Housing Opportunity
Enhancement Program) grant from Dakota County for this project.
The supportive housing complex will consist of 60 one-bed units, which
will each be approximately 600 square feet. The complex will also
include a common area, and lots of green space. The complex will have a
veteran preference for tenants, with services offered to the tenants
from the Hastings Veterans Home.
I chief-authored the supportive housing unit bill in the Minnesota
House, and am very happy the complex will soon be built.
This is outstanding news for our veterans and our community. Staff at
the Minnesota Veterans Home in Hastings often discussed with me the need
for a supportive housing complex, and I chief-authored the supportive
housing unit bill in the Minnesota House for several years. I’m very
pleased this deal was reached.
Keep in touch,
Denny
