NEWS AND VIEWS FROM REP. DENNY McNAMARA

Hi everybody,

Summer is sure flying by fast! I'd like to take the opportunity to update you on several different items.

First, a reminder that it is now illegal to throw your old television sets in with your weekly garbage. This is because the cathode-ray tubes, which are found in TV sets and computer monitors, cause problems because they contain a significant amount of lead. Basically, if your old TV gets hauled to an incinerator, the lead becomes airborne. If it is dumped in a landfill, it can pollute our groundwater.

With these obvious environmental concerns, I'm glad that these sets will no longer be taken to the landfill. The new law preventing TV's and computer monitors from being thrown in the trash can took effect on July 1. It's important to note that many recycling centers will take your sets for a nominal fee, or you can always wait for a local business to hold a take-back event, where monitors can usually be left at no charge. While this may seem like a pain, know that this is another small way in which we can protect our environment for our children and grandchildren.

And some local news. . . Hastings Rivertown Days are this weekend - Friday, July 14th through Sunday, July 16th. For more information, click on http://www.hastingsmn.org/rivertownday.htm. The 2006 Rivertown Days Twilight Parade will be at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 15th. Look for me and listen for the "McNamara" theme song - we'll be Unit #19!

I recently received some good news from the Department of Natural Resources: Lake Isabel will be getting its fishing pier once the City of Hastings completes the necessary preparations. The City of Hastings, the Minnesota DNR and the east-side residents of Hastings worked very hard on this issue. It was great working with them and seeing their hard work rewarded with such positive results.

Back at the State Capitol, the Minnesota Army National Guard came in at the end of June for a special day of informational training. All Members and Staff in the House and Senate were invited to attend this seminar about the potential needs of combat veterans and their families. We received great information that will help prepare us for the 2,700+ combat veterans who will be returning home to Minnesota by March of 2007. If you or someone you know has any questions on issues relating to veterans, please contact my office at 651-296-3135 and we can help point you in the right direction.

Thanks and keep in touch! Denny
