McNAMARA SAYS TV AND COMPUTER RECYLCING LAW WILL TAKE EFFECT JULY 1

ST. PAUL – State Representative Denny McNamara (R-Hastings) is reminding residents that it will soon be illegal to include old television sets with your weekly garbage. McNamara, who serves on the House Environment and Natural Resources Committee, is glad that these sets will no longer be taken to the landfill.

“Cathode-ray tubes, which are found in TV sets and computer monitors, are causing problems because they contain a significant amount of lead,” McNamara said. “If your old TV gets hauled to an incinerator, the lead becomes airborne. If it is dumped in a landfill, it can pollute our groundwater.”

The new law preventing TV’s and computer monitors from being thrown in the trash can takes effect July 1. McNamara added that many recycling centers will take the sets for a nominal fee, or that residents can also wait for a local business to hold a “take-back” event, where monitors can usually be left at no charge.
