Honoring Officer Bergeron

Last Saturday Maplewood Police Sergeant Joseph Bergeron was shot and killed while keeping our community safe on the East Side of Saint Paul. He was investigating a suspected car-jacking involving two men. One of those men, Jason J. Jones, approached Bergeron’s cruiser and fired before Bergeron could get out. He ran off into the surrounding neighborhood with his accomplice Joshua Jackson.

Police set up a perimeter to find the two suspects. Eventually, Jones confronted another officer, David Longbehn, and smashed his nose with a bolt. Longbehn was able to shoot Jones in the ensuing fight. Jones was apprehended a few hours later by the police. State Rep. John Lesch issued the following statement regarding the tragedy.

“Sergeant Bergeron made the ultimate sacrifice protecting our community. I wish to send my condolences to his family and the men and women he served with in the Maplewood Police Department. Horrific incidents like these serve to remind us of the dangers police officers face.

Because of the brave work of Bergeron, Longbehn and our community's cops, two more violent criminals are off our streets. I urge every one of our citizens to take a moment and think about these cops who protect us. Make sure they know that you appreciate everything they do for us. Without them, our state wouldn’t be known as a family friendly place. To everyone who has carried a badge through our streets-thank you."
