St. Paul, MN – Representative John Lesch, of St. Paul, (DFL – 66A) has enlisted in the Minnesota Army National Guard, with an infantry MOS. He will report for basic training on Monday, October 12.
“Though I already serve Minnesota as a prosecutor and as a legislator, I recently raised my hand and took a different kind of oath where I promised to protect our nation from all enemies, foreign and domestic, said Rep. Lesch. “In doing so, I can only hope to perform as ably as the thousands of Minnesota servicemen and women who already do us proud at home and abroad."
Across the country, 65 legislators currently serve in either the National Guard or Reserves of various military branches. 31 have been deployed to another country since the National Network of Legislators in the Military began its survey in 2006.
“I am very proud of John and respect his decision to serve Minnesota in the Army National Guard,” said House Speaker Margaret Anderson Kelliher. “Serving both country and state is not easy, but I know he is ready for the challenge. The perspective of other active-duty military legislators from around the country will also be valuable to John as he prepares for duty.”
"SPC Lesch is just one example of the average citizen who responds to the call to serve Minnesota and our nation,” said Lt. Colonel Jake Kulzer, recruiting commander of the Minnesota Army National Guard. “The Guard is an ideal place for any citizen who seeks a new challenge or a new skill.”
“Growing up in Minnesota, I learned that the price of liberty in a free nation means every citizen has a duty to serve,” said Rep. Lesch. “There are many ways in which we can serve, but especially sacred is the role of the many men and women who wear uniforms every day in defense of freedom in America and across the globe.
