ST. PAUL – The Minnesota House of Representatives passed legislation authored by Rep. John Lesch (DFL – St. Paul) to protect Minnesota consumers from paying cell phone charges incurred when someone else has stolen the phone. The bill passed on a vote of 91 to 40.
“Minnesota consumers need our state laws on their side when it comes to unauthorized charges on their cell phones," said Lesch. “This bill will put in law a base level of protection so that all Minnesotans can be assured that if your cell phone is lost or stolen, you won’t be stuck with a massive bill.”
A constituent of Lesch’s received a $1500 bill from their cell phone company several months after his son had lost his cell phone. Under this new law, all consumers would not be responsible for cell phone charges racked up by an unauthorized user. Representatives from the cell phone companies complained the bill was not necessary because most cell phone companies currently work with customers whose cell phone changes and “often” erase charges. Lesch said often wasn’t good enough.
“It’s not in the interest of Minnesota consumers to simply take cell phone companies at their word on something this serious,” said Lesch. “We are putting basic protections into law so that all Minnesota consumers are guaranteed these basic rights.”
