HOUSE BRIEFS

WEEK SIX EMAIL UPDATE

Property tax relief is one of the most talked about issues at that Capitol this year, and as well it should be. But people often overlook the property tax relief options Minnesota already has. As your representative, I want to make sure you what is out there and how you can use it to your benefit. Below is a list of current property tax relief programs. You can find much more detailed information at www.taxes.state.mn.us. You can also call me with any questions. I am always happy to help Minnesotans reduce their tax burden.

THE “Curcuit Breaker” TAX REFUND
Did your property taxes go up more than 12 percent last year? If so, you are eligible for a partial refund, regardless of your income.

HOMEOWNER’S PROPERTY TAX REFUND
Do you own your home? Homeowners with incomes below $91,000 are eligible for partial refunds. If you have dependents, are disabled or a senior citizen, you will have a higher income limit.

THE RENTER’S REBATE
Do you think you miss out on property tax relief because you rent? Think again! Part of your rent does pay property taxes. Like other relief programs, there is a maximum income limit of $49,160 for singe filers and higher amounts for parents and seniors. Your landlord should have given you a Certificate of Rent Paid by now for you to claim your refund. If not, contact them immediately and request it ASAP.

SENIORS DEFERRAL
Are you a senior citizen who struggles to pay property taxes? If so, you are eligible for a deferment that allows you to postpone payments until a later time or when you choose to sell your home.

Again, you can find more information and download 2006 tax forms at www.taxes.state.mn.us. I hope you find this information helpful and I will keep you aware of any new property tax relief options as they come forward in 2007.

Thanks!
