Take time to thank Veterans

To the Editor:
Each year on November 11, we celebrate Veteran's Day by honoring the men and women who have served our country. At a time of war, our thoughts and prayers are especially with the men and women who are serving in active duty. We are given an opportunity on this day to publicly say "thank you" for their sacrifices and the sacrifices that are being made daily by their families.
We want Minnesota to be a good state for veterans to return home to, a place where they can pick up their lives and move forward. This past session, we passed several provisions that will help them do that. Members of the Minnesota National Guard will now be able to pursue a higher education degree and receive 100% tuition reimbursement at all state colleges and universities. They are also now exempt from paying the Motor Vehicle Sales Tax on their personal vehicles during and 90 days after a deployment. And, to allow them to take advantage of the federal health insurance they qualify for, active duty soldiers can now suspend their MinnesotaCare coverage while they serve, and reenroll once they return home.
For our veterans of previous wars, we approved $5.4 for construction and upkeep at state veterans' homes, and we designated $670,000 for a WWII memorial on the Capitol Grounds. There are also new, "Support Our Troops" license plates, with the proceeds going to military families and veterans' organizations.
This Veterans' Day, let's all take the time to reflect and be grateful for all that the men and women of the military have done for us. We also need to reach out locally to do what we can to help them, as they leave family members behind and once they return home.

Sincerely,
Representative David Dill
