As we move into fall and the quickly approaching colder weather, it's time to think about heating our homes for the winter. Along with the escalating prices at the gas pump, it is also expected that natural gas and propane costs will increase, as much as 30%, according to some predictions. These rising costs affect all of us, but can be especially difficult for lower-income households and those living on fixed incomes.
There is help available. The Arrowhead Economic Opportunity Agency (AEOA) offers an Energy Assistance program for residents of Cook, Lake and St. Louis counties. They offer financial assistance with heating costs for low-income households and also some limited crisis funding for those threatened with utility disconnects or if their vendor refuses to deliver fuel. To receive an application, call toll free at 1- 800-662-5711.
AEOA also offers assistance with weatherization. They have energy auditors who can evaluate your house, and experienced crews to insulate it so your heating costs are less. Services are free for low-income households. AEOA is also able to analyze how much electricity you may be wasting, and may be able to help you get upgraded appliances if you live in an area served my Minnesota Power. For more information on this service, call toll free 1-800-662-5711.
There are also many easy ways to reduce your energy cost at home, including things such as weatherizing doors, caulking windows, landscaping changes and sealing air and moisture leaks. For a complete list, go to www.eere.energy.gov, and look under consumers.
