Representative David Dill (DFL-Crane Lake) recently received notification that the Minnesota Housing Finance Agency (MHFA) has approved an award of $100,000 to the Minnesota Chippewa Tribe for homeownership projects in Grand Portage and the Bois Forte Reservation.
The award will focus on the Pine Hollow Estates development in Pike Bay Township and the Grand Portage Reservation and will be used to help fill the gap in financing for interested buyers.
"This money is a real gift to residents in this area who cannot afford the high cost of housing," said Dill. "It specifically targets American Indians, giving them the ability to borrow up to $25,000, interest-free."
According to Dill, the loans are 30-year deferred, due on sale of the property. The homebuyer income limit is 60% of the state median and the anticipated sales price per unit is $95,000, with four new housing units planned.
"Competition for this funding was strong," said Dill. "We were fortunate to be one of the 19 proposals out of all of the applications to receive an award."
