ST PAUL -- The Minnesota Historical Society awarded the Lake County and Bay Area Historical Societies some well-needed funding through a program called Grants-in-Aid.

It was clear to the director of the Minnesota Historical Society that the societies in Silver Bay and in Lake County deserved the funding.

"We’re delighted to support these fine projects in your district," Director Nina Archabal said.

The society in Lake County will receive $6,000 in grants and $241,200 in matching dollars to go towards restoring the Mallet Locomotive. The Bay Area Historical Society will receive $7,000 in grants and $11,823 in matching to fund an exhibit called “The Story of Reserve Mining".

State Representative David Dill (DFL--Crane Lake) is proud these societies that serve the northland with sites around the Iron Range have received these grants.

"Preserving our history is important responsibility for every generation to undertake," Rep. Dill said. "If we want to know where we are going as a state, we need to know where we have been."

Grants-in-Aid is a program supports projects conducted by non-profit historical organizations and local units of government that interpret and preserve Minnesota's history. In 2009, $147,325 has been awarded to thirty-nine projects in the state.
