Rep. Dill co-authors Transit Assistance Fund; Northern Schools would benefit

ST PAUL -- State Representative David Dill has co-authored a bill that would ensure that students continue reap the rewards of our school district’s busing system.

Under current law regarding transit, the state separates costs under the definitions of "transit purposes" and "public transit assistance". The Transit Assistance Fund proposes that school busing would be defined in under those terms in order to receive funding from the State Motor Vehicle Sales Tax.

The proposal would allocate $100 million dollars to all the school districts of Minnesota. For the Iron Range, the preliminary numbers for the Iron Range schools look like this:

Cook County Public Schools $77,697
St. Louis County School District $241,394
Lake Superior School District $183,169
Ely Public School District $45,210
Nett Lake Public School District $15,207
Duluth Public School District $987,222

The bill has been introduced to the K-12 Finance and Policy Committee and awaits further action in the House. Its companion bill in the senate is also seeing progress. For more information about this legislation contact State Rep. David Dill by phone at (651) 296-2190 (office) or by email at rep.david.dill@house.mn.
