An amendment to the Higher Education Finance Bill that was proposed by Representative David Dill (DFL-Crane Lake) passed unanimously on the House floor today. If this bill becomes law, it has the potential of bringing 150-200 scientists to the Tower/Soudan mine.
The project would require a one-time, $250,000 appropriation from a permanent University of Minnesota trust fund. It would allow for mining of samples at the Tower/Soudan mine, 9,000ft. below ground. These samples will be used to compete for a Deep Underground Science Experimental Laboratory (DUSEL) that is sponsored by the National Science Foundation.
"To be able to compete for this project is very important to our region," said Dill. "This very worthwhile research would put us on the cutting edge of technology and would bring real money into our economy."
The National Science Foundation is considering several sites where they will be able to do research at that level.
"Imagine a mine that is large enough to drive a tractor truck through 9,000ft. below the earth," said Dill. "This is the magnitude of the project we are talking about."
The site that is approved for this project could see as many as 150-200 scientists move into the area, for as long as 20-30 years. The money used for this project would not impact the number of University of Minnesota scholarships that are awarded to students in this area.
"I'm very pleased that the entire body of the House agreed that this is a worthwhile investment," said Dill. "This has the potential of putting our area on the map with regard to scientific advancements and breakthroughs."
