For over 30 years, the Minnesota House of Representatives High School Page Program has provided hundreds of high school students throughout the state the opportunity to experience first-hand our state government in action. Last session, Alex Corbett of Ely participated in the program, working closely with State Representative David Dill, as well as meeting other state legislators and experiencing a wide range of state government
"It was great to have Alex working with me," said Rep. Dill. "She is bright and enthusiastic, and I believe she took away some life-changing experiences as the result of her week here."
During their week at the Capitol, the students meet individually with state representatives to discuss the issues that matter most to them, assist members during the legislative sessions, participate in a mock committee session that will inspire them to think critically about the issues facing our state and meet with constitutional officers, members of the judiciary, lobbyists, and members of the media.
As the result of her experiences in the page program, Alex is considering minoring in political science in college, and has also been encouraged to apply for the Page Program in Washington.
The Minnesota House of Representatives High School Page Program is open to all Minnesota high school students in their junior year, and the deadline for applying for the 2008 session is November 16, 2007. Program participants are selected in the fall of each year based on a formal process, which includes an application, faculty recommendation and an essay.
