ST. PAUL – State Representative David Dill announced this week that an amendment to extend state unemployment benefits to Ainsworth employees has passed its first hurdle. The amendment was passed by the House Higher Education and Workforce Development Committee, and would offer an additional 13 weeks of unemployment.
Ainsworth laid off workers in Bemidji, Cook, and Grand Rapids last fall. Many workers will begin exhausting their benefits later this month.
"As unemployment benefits are exhausted, many of these workers are anxiously seeking work – often outside of our area," said Dill. "I'm hopeful 13 additional weeks of unemployment benefits will help them retrain and find another job that keeps them in our community. "
Rep. Frank Moe (DFL-Bemidji), who serves on the committee, offered the amendment on behalf of the workers who were laid off in Northern Minnesota.
According to Dill, even though the Ainsworth plant in Cook is going back to work on March 19th and may workers will be returning to their employment, others will still be in need of additional benefits.
"We've go to get this bill passed and to the Governor as soon as possible," added Dill. "These workers are members of our community who are well-trained, highly educated and great workers.
We need to find a way to keep them here."
