REP. DILL ENCOURAGES TAXPAYERS TO DELAY FILING 2006 TAX RETURNS New law offers tax savings to thousands of Minnesotans

ST. PAUL – Representative David Dill (DFL-Crane Lake) is encouraging taxpayers to pay close attention to the newspapers and telecasts this coming week as legislation passed by the House works it’s way through the Senate and the Governors office. The Bill, House File could be signed into law as early as this week and provide for significant savings for many working families, teachers and veterans.
The Federal Conformity Bill adopts changes passed at the federal level since the adjournment of the 2006 Minnesota legislative session. The bill will provide over $20 million in tax relief by extending current deductions for tuition and deductions for out-of-pocket expenses paid by teachers.
Rep. Dill, who serves on the Tax Committee, said it was important to pass this legislation as soon as possible, “swift passage of this bill gives many Minnesotans the opportunity to save some money as they fill out their 2006 returns and by getting this done before filing gets started it will help reduce the number of Minnesotans that have to file amended returns later to claim the deductions." said Dill.

The provisions of the bill include:
· Deduction for qualified tuition and related expenses: This allows low- and middle-income taxpayers to deduct up to $4,000 of higher education tuition and related expenses.
· Deduction for classroom teacher expenses: The allowance of the $250 above-the-line deduction for K-12 educators of the amount paid for books and supplies for their classrooms will be extended.
· Heroes Earned Retirement Opportunities Act: this provision allows tax-exempt combat pay to be used as a basis for making IRA contributions. Without this provision, members of the military (including the National Guard) who are deployed to combat zones and have little earned income other than their combat pay will be required to track earnings on their IRAs separately for state and federal purposes.
