St. Paul, MN – State Representative David Dill (DFL-Crane Lake) and State Senator Tom Bakk (DFL – Cook) applauded the final version of the Capital Investment Bill passed this month, saying it included critical funding for five state Veteran's Homes, one of which is located in Silver Bay.
According to Dill, the Veteran's Home in Silver Bay would like to make some improvements and expand its services. This funding, combined with matching federal dollars, will allow them to do that.
"The bonding money shows the states continued commitment to the five state-owned veterans homes," said Dill.
Stephen Musser, the Executive Director of the Veterans Homes Board, said the $1.7 million allocated provides the state's 35% required funding to be eligible for a federal match through the VA State Home Construction Grant Program. The project has been submitted to the VA and will now be eligible to compete for a federal match of 65% as funds become available.
This funding will help pay for intergenerational programming of adult and child day care, provides for respite and hospice beds, and includes an area for a chapel and a library, among other projects.
"The Silver Bay home is an important part of the Lake County/Silver Bay economy and landscape and we need to continue our efforts to keep it open," said Dill. "While the bonding money they received is very welcome, the State Legislature will need to re-assess the operational budget request again next session."
"Senator Dill and I will continue to look for opportunities at the State Capitol to improve the Silver Bay facilities," added Bakk. "Our state needs to continue to honor our commitment of quality health care for our veterans."
