CORNISH ANNOUNCES NEW TECHNOLOGY FUNDING FOR AREA SCHOOLS

ST. PAUL – State Representative Tony Cornish (R-Good Thunder) announces that area school will soon see new technology funding, thanks to a class action lawsuit settlement between the State of Minnesota and Microsoft.

“Our schools will be able to purchase new hardware and software as a result of this settlement,” Cornish said. “Students and teachers will eventually be the big winners here.”

In all, state school districts will receive $55.2 million in vouchers to buy new computer hardware and software. The money is part of a $182 million settlement which alleged that Microsoft overcharged Minnesota consumers and businesses for certain products.

Cornish said the settlement allowed that any consumer or business in Minnesota that bought certain products from Microsoft was eligible to receive vouchers to purchase new hardware or software. After the deadline for the public closed, half the value of the unclaimed vouchers was made available to the Minnesota Department of Education. The voucher amount available to each district or charter school is based upon its percentage of the state’s total free and reduced price lunch eligible students.

Cornish said area schools in his legislative district will receive more than $453,000 in vouchers. The breakdown is listed below:
St. Clair: $30,422.70
United South Central: $93,972.34
Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial: $42,366.43
Maple River: $79,775.08
N.R.H.E.G. $60,845.40
Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton: $30,197.35
Waseca: $115,606.26

“It should be noted that the vouchers will supplement current school technology budgets and that districts cannot direct current technology funds to other areas,” Cornish said. “I’m pleased that area schools have the opportunity to improve their technology needs as a result of this settlement.”
