NEWS RELEASE

CORNISH SUPPORTS GOVERNOR’S OFFER TO END SESSION ON TIME

ST. PAUL – State Representative Tony Cornish (R-Good Thunder) said he is pleased with Governor Pawlenty’s offer to raise a fee in order to end legislative gridlock and bring closure to the 2005 legislative session.

“We know many will complain that this is a tax even though it is a fee,” Cornish said. “The bottom line is that the proposal raises revenue and attempts to end session on time.”

Pawlenty’s plan would create a dedicated Health Impact Fee that will raise $380 million over the next two years. The fee would be an increase to the existing tobacco distributor fee by 75 cents per pack. The fee would fund health care programs and free up additional general fund dollars to dramatically increase K-12 education program funds.

As part of the package, the Governor said the Legislature must pass two additional initiatives. According the Governor’s Office, those proposals include:
• Initiative and Referendum – a citizen solution when their leaders logjam
• Meaningful school choice – so that disadvantaged kids can succeed
• A ban on teacher strikes during the school year- so students aren’t hostages
• Tribal/Racino partnership – for fairness

“This is a bold move that I support,” Cornish said. “The Governor has offered to add even more money to K-12 education, which the Senate wants. Its put up or shut up time for the Senate. It cannot continue to complain about a lack of compromise if it refuses to do so.”
