REP. CORNISH: STATE SPENDING CONTINUES TO BE CAUSE OF MAMMOTH BUDGET DEFICIT PROJECTION

ST. PAUL – State Representative Tony Cornish (R-Good Thunder) said he was encouraged that Minnesota’s current budget deficit is shrinking, but disappointed that a massive budget deficit remains.

“Right now, we’re $984 million better off than we were last week,” Cornish said. “That means lawmakers won’t have to make as many budget cuts, but it’s clear we need to reform state government spending this year if we are going to end this continuing cycle of budget deficits.”

Cornish said the 2012-13 budget projections show that Minnesota can expect to collect $2.7 billion in revenue, and without spending reform, it can expect to spend $9 billion – which is a whopping 29 percent spending increase from the previous budget cycle.

“Once again, the numbers prove Minnesota has a spending problem, and it’s time we get this problem under control,” Cornish said.

Cornish, who chairs the Minnesota House Public Safety and Crime Prevention Policy and Finance Committee, said he will now begin setting budget targets for programs relating to Minnesota’s public safety and court systems. He expects this process to be completed in the next few weeks.
