REP. CORNISH: SESSION ENDS ON TIME WITH BUDGET DEAL

ST. PAUL – With time running out on the 2010 Legislative Session, legislative leaders and Governor Tim Pawlenty were able to strike a deal that would solve Minnesota’s $3 billion budget deficit.

“Obviously it would have been nice to reform government a bit more so we could have better addressed the projected $6 billion shortfall that will face lawmakers during the 2011 session,” Cornish said. “But at least Minnesota has avoided a California-like bankruptcy.”

Cornish said a K-12 Education payment shift and temporary legislative ratification of Governor Pawlenty’s 2009 unallotments helped solve the shortfall. Cornish said there will also be an option for the current or next governor to opt-in to the Obamacare federal health program.

Cornish said tax increases were not part of the final solution, although Democratic leadership attempted to force them on Minnesotans just days earlier. Thankfully, according to Cornish, the liberals came to their senses after Governor Pawlenty rejected their $400 million tax hike plan.

“One thing they’ve proved, no matter what the circumstances, the Democrats just can’t help themselves when it comes to raising taxes,” Cornish said. “They called it ‘taxing the rich,’ but their definition of rich ends up being most Minnesota farmers and small businessmen. Thankfully, Governor Pawlenty and House Republicans stood firm in their opposition to tax increases, because we were ultimately able to solve this deficit without them.”

“This fall's election looks to be a huge referendum for loading thousands of people onto ‘no limit, free health care’ paid by the average taxpayer,” Cornish continued. “The opt in section of this year's settlement means that if we get a DFL Governor in January, we're stuck with Obamacare, as he or she will almost certainly sign us up, while a Republican governor will pass.”
