ST. PAUL – In order to promote tourism in the area, State Representative Tony Cornish (R-Good Thunder) and State Senator Julie Rosen (R-Fairmont) are sponsoring legislation that would designate the Blue Earth River as a water trail.
“There are many points of interest along the river that boaters would likely be interested in exploring,” Cornish said. “It makes sense to do what we can to promote some of the interesting sites in our area,”
"Southern Minnesota has much to offer to tourists," said Rosen. "I am anxious to share our area and river with visitors."
In 1983, the DNR released a report titled "The Statewide Outstanding Rivers Inventory." The report listed the ten streams/rivers as having a first (top) priority for detailed study and plan development. Of those ten, the Blue Earth River is the only stream which has not been designated a water trail.
The proposed legislation dedicates $60,000 to mark canoe and boating routes on the Blue Earth River which have historic and scenic values. Any points of interest, portages, camp sites, dams, rapids, waterfalls, whirlpools, and other serious hazards that are dangerous to canoe and watercraft travelers would also be identified.
The designated area of the Blue Earth River would begin in Faribault County and end at Sibley Park in Mankato.
