LETTER TO THE EDITOR

CORNISH WILL NOT ACCEPT PAY INCREASE

To the editor:

Recently, a committee in the House of Representatives, made up of Republicans and Democrats, raised my pay by increasing my per diem by $10 a day - or roughly $1500 per session. Most representatives were not aware this was about to happen, and the action of the committee does not require a vote on the House floor. I had heard it might be attempted, but the first time I knew for sure was when I saw it in the papers.

Last year, state troopers, conservation officers, and Bureau of Criminal Apprehension agents - along with thousands of other state employees – received a zero percent increase for each year of their two year contract, while their insurance premiums were jacked up. Many workers in the private sector are suffering the same fate, and this year looks bleak as well.

I consider myself a fiscal conservative and approve of the "tightening the belts" and "biting the bullet" ideas along with cuts and freezes if necessary until we get through these financially strenuous times. With that said, it seems hypocritical to raise the pay of lawmakers at this point. So, this week I will call House Administrative Services and ask them to reduce my per diem so that cut in my pay will equal the $1500 by the end of this session.

Not long ago, I entered into the “Walk a Mile” program with the Minnesota Valley Action Council. It would be awfully difficult to convince these people to put up with less, if I'm not willing.
