NEWS RELEASE

REP. CORNISH: FINAL DAYS OF 2008 SESSION YIELD POSITIVE RESULTS

ST. PAUL – State Representative Tony Cornish (R-Good Thunder) said he was pleased that the 2008 Legislative Session ended on a positive note.

“It took us a while to reach the finish line, but once legislative leaders and Governor Pawlenty put their differences aside and reached a compromise agreement, they were able to put together a good final product,” Cornish said.

Cornish said much of the discussions centered on eliminating Minnesota’s $935 million budget deficit. The final plan eliminates the budget deficit by taking $500 million from Minnesota’s rainy day fund, making $355 million in spending cuts, and making changes to the corporate tax system, which will yield roughly $100 million in new revenue.

Also included in the deal negotiated between the Minnesota House, Senate, and Governor Pawlenty is property tax relief. $25 million in direct property tax refunds; $60 million is used for additional Local Government Aid; and a 3.9 % property tax cap is instituted for the next three years in order to limit the size of local levy increases.

Nursing homes will also benefit, as a two percent cost of living adjustment was included in the final negotiation.

But as he reflected on the session, Rep. Cornish said one of the biggest highlights centered on the numerous tax increase proposals that didn’t become law.

“The people that ran the Minnesota House over the past two years authored legislation that would have led to $5 billion in tax increases,” Cornish said. “When folks ask me what our greatest accomplishment was this session, I will tell them that we kept more of their money in their wallets.”
