ST. PAUL – State Representative Doug Magnus (R-Slayton) said he is honored to have been asked to take part in an agricultural trade delegation that will visit Havana, Cuba from March 29 to April 2 to promote Minnesota agricultural exports.
“Minnesota Agriculture Commissioner Gene Hugoson asked me to take part in the trip, which I was happy to do,” Magnus said. “I have been on many trade missions in my past role as International Marketing Chairman of the United Soybean Board, some of them with Commissioner Hugoson, so we have worked together for many years.”
While in Havana, the delegation will meet with Cuba’s commodity purchasers to discuss future sales contracts with Minnesota companies.
According to the Minnesota Department of Agriculture, this trade mission follows a trip in October 2007, when Cuban officials confirmed their ongoing interest in building stronger trade ties with Minnesota’s agricultural community. Since the state’s first introduction in the Cuban market in 2002, the country has purchased soy, corn, wheat, DDGs, milk replacer, dry edible beans and livestock from Minnesota. Minnesota exports to Cuba were valued at $18.3 million in 2007.
Magnus was honored by the Minnesota Department of Agriculture with the first ever “Excellence in Agriculture Award” for his work in export markets.
“This trip will be similar to my trade missions to China during the mid-1990's because it is another country entering a transition period,” Magnus noted. “Since then, China has become a huge agricultural export market for Minnesota. We are hoping to achieve similar results in Cuba.”
