NEWS RELEASE

CORNISH APPROVES FLOOD RELIEF PACKAGE

ST. PAUL – On September 11, members of the Minnesota House and Senate were called into a one day special session by Governor Tim Pawlenty in order to pass a flood relief package that will help southeastern Minnesota storm victims rebuild their homes and communities. State Representative Tony Cornish (R-Good Thunder) voted to approve the proposal.

“Damaging flood waters destroyed a countless number of homes and businesses,” Cornish said. “Hopefully, this flood relief package will give victims the assistance they need.”

Cornish said the nearly $157 million package is dedicated to flood disaster relief in Dodge, Fillmore, Houston, Olmsted, Steele, Wabasha, and Winona counties. Much of this funding will be used to:

• Provide relief to home and business owners impacted by the flood repair
• Replace and rehabilitate damaged bridges and highways
• Remove debris
• Repair and replace storm sewers and wastewater plants
• Provide student enrollment impact aid and school cleanup assistance to affected school districts

Cornish added that $2 million was also dedicated in the bill for the Interstate 35W bridge collapse in order to access nearly $57 million in funds that have been allocated for that project at the federal level.

The special session also included a small bill to give a two year extension to the mandate that townships use voting machines during their March elections. Cornish said this will save rural townships money and give additional time to work out a compromise on the issue.

“Without this change, it would have meant our townships would have been holding illegal elections,” Cornish noted. “Because my district has more than 40 townships, this was an important issue to me and our rural residents, and I’m pleased we were able to work out a deal.”
