GAY RIGHTS PROPOSAL OPPOSED BY REP. CORNISH

ST. PAUL – A controversial state government finance proposal that included provisions to give benefits to the same-sex domestic partners of state and local employees has been approved by the Minnesota House. State Representative Tony Cornish opposed the measure, which was approved by a 68-64 margin

“Many feel that allowing same-sex benefits is the first step towards allowing legalized gay marriage in the State of Minnesota, and that’s why it was a close vote,” Cornish said.

The bill allows all “partners” to be eligible for state benefits, for both same-sex and opposite sex. Cornish said this would have an enormous fiscal impact that would have to be absorbed by the agencies or individual employees through higher health care premiums. Nearly 3,000 “partners” would qualify, costing the state more than $14 million per year to pay for the coverage benefits.

“Regardless of your sexual preference, allowing boyfriends and girlfriends of state employees to receive state benefits is a stupid idea,” Cornish said. “Its fraud waiting to happen and the state taxpayers will end up footing the bill.”

Cornish also noted that the state government bill also eases the regulations on voter registration, which could cause further problems with voter fraud.

Cornish said Governor Pawlenty will not sign the legislation if it reaches his desk.
