CORNISH PLAYS ‘LET’S MAKE A DEAL’ Rep. Cornish, House DFL leadership reach agreement on hearing for Castle Doctrine bill

ST. PAUL – State Representative Tony Cornish (R-Good Thunder) reports that he has made a deal with DFL leaders in the Minnesota House to have his Castle Doctrine heard in the House Public Safety Committee next year with a full committee vote.

“I had planned on making a procedural motion to have the bill heard on the House floor,” Cornish said. “Instead, they accepted my offer of giving the bill a full hearing next year with witnesses and a vote, and it cannot be put off until the last day of session. The Speaker and I have a handshake agreement.”

Cornish’s Castle Doctrine bill authorizes the use of deadly force against an unwanted attacker in an effort to allow Minnesota citizens to protect themselves and their property from law-breaking criminals that enter by stealth or force into their home, car or business.

Cornish said the deal gives him ample time to line up robbery victims and self defense experts to give testimony at the committee hearing. He also noted that hundreds of bill supporters contacted DFL leaders and urged them to give the legislation a hearing, and that their support helped make this progress possible.

“My thanks to everyone who helped put legislators’ feet to the fire,” Cornish said. “The letters and phone calls made all the difference, and now we can focus our Castle Doctrine efforts on next year’s hearing and do our part to help this common sense legislation become law.”
