ST. PAUL – State Representative Tony Cornish (R-Good Thunder) said he voted against a $9.1 billion Minnesota House transportation proposal because it contained an assortment of tax and fee increases that some Minnesotans can’t afford.
“Reports from the media stating that those who voted no on this bill were simply voting against a gas tax are truly misleading,” Cornish said. “The proposed gas tax was only one of many reasons I voted against the bill.”
Cornish said total increases from taxes and fees in the bill are about $900 million per year. This included a ten-cent per-gallon gas tax increase, as well as a wheelage tax, vehicle excise tax, license tab fee increases, title record fee increases, a half-cent sales tax increase in the metro area without a referendum, and a half-cent sales tax increase in rural Minnesota counties with a referendum.
“Some of our researchers determined that all of these increases would cost the average Minnesota family an extra 500 dollars each year,” Cornish said. “That’s a bitter pill to swallow, especially for those with lower incomes.”
Cornish noted that Governor Pawlenty has already promised to veto any transportation bill that includes tax increases of any kind.
