ST. PAUL – A bill mandating that 25 percent of all energy be derived from renewable sources by the year 2025 has been approved in the Minnesota House. State Representative Tony Cornish (R-Good Thunder) joined the majority in approving the measure.
“We need to do everything we can to reduce our reliance on foreign oil,” Cornish said. “Our farmers have helped us tremendously in this area, as we’ve taken big steps towards independence through our commitments to the biodiesel and ethanol programs. This bill represents another step towards reaching that goal.”
The bill requires more production of renewable energies such as wind, hydrogen and solar power. Cornish noted that many utilities, environmental groups and business supported the legislation.
“Approving this requirement means Minnesota has the highest renewable energy standard in the nation,” Cornish said.
Cornish said Governor Pawlenty is expected to sign the bill in the next few days.
