ST. PAUL – State Representative Tony Cornish (R-Good Thunder) is co-authoring legislation this session that would end the equity gap between rural and Metro Area nursing homes in Minnesota.
“A nursing home is a nursing home, and state reimbursement rates should reflect that,” Cornish said.
The legislation would allow rural nursing homes to be reimbursed at the median rate of Metro facilities in Minnesota. Currently, those facilities receive significantly less than their counterparts from the Metro Area.
Minnesota nursing homes are currently reimbursed on a tiered system based on the facilities’ annual projections and geographic region. This puts smaller homes at a competitive disadvantage when trying to provide service to its residents, and in trying to entice caregivers to work for their organization.
“This legislation is critical to the survival of long-term care facilities across the state,” Cornish said. “These facilities and their employees provide a valuable service to our elderly and more vulnerable residents, and we need to ensure that they are treated appropriately.”
Cornish’s bill was held over for possible inclusion in a more comprehensive health omnibus bill that will be debated on the House floor in the coming weeks. Cornish noted that he’s co-authoring several nursing home funding bills this session, and that reimbursement rate equity is one of the 2007 priorities for the I-90 Group.
