CORNISH SAYS GOVERNOR’S STATE OF THE STATE ADDRESS IS ON THE RIGHT TRACK

ST. PAUL – Asking Minnesota leaders to “boldly lead” while setting the budget for the next two years, Governor Tim Pawlenty gave his vision for Minnesota while delivering his annual State of the State Address on January 17.

“I appreciated his positive comments, and his words about not raising state taxes,” Representative Tony Cornish, (R-Good Thunder) said.

Pawlenty said lawmakers can enhance Minnesota’s prosperity and progress by focusing on better government by being fiscally responsible; better energy by improving our use of renewable fuels; better education through funding increases and academic reforms; and better health care by expanding access to more Minnesotans through private sector solutions.

Finally, the governor noted that state government needs to live within its means, and urged legislators to approve tax-cutting legislation that provides property tax relief, tax relief for veterans, and other tax cuts that will assist Minnesota’s economy.

“Our economy is in great shape, as we have a $1 billion surplus resulting from our work the past four years,” Cornish said. “The worst thing we could do right now is raise taxes in order to increase government spending, and I’m pleased the Governor brought this issue to light.”
